As we prepare for next year's lambing and milk production, September was crucial for improving the grass condition before winter and aiding its recovery from the hot, dry summer. Applying a generous amount of manure to the fields, coupled with welcome rain and warm weather in September, along with a strict prohibition on walking on the grass, has worked wonders. The sheep will soon return for a pre-winter feast before they are brought indoors for a cozy winter.

We have begun preparations for the breeding season, which will commence for us in December. In collaboration with our excellent new veterinary practice, we have decided that 32 sheep will be introduced to Mr. Ram, while 10 will undergo artificial insemination with the Lacaune breed. This approach aims to develop replacement stock and assess its potential effectiveness for future flock replacements.

In addition to planning for next year, the significant event of the month was the decision to operate on Dandelion and remove her eye. Her eye had suddenly begun to bulge, necessitating a quick decision. Fortunately, the day of the operation was warm and dry. After sedating her (two doses, as she is a strong sheep!), Charlie successfully removed the eye. It was definitely a good decision and a risk worth taking. Thankfully, the procedure went really well, the eye has healed, and I believe she is much happier. She looks so good that we plan to have her breed for replacements. I have high hopes she will be a good mother and one of our milking stars.
